Outdoor steam tractor show to rival any in the world. The massive grounds bristle with dozens of massive steam and kerosene-fueled traction engines from a bygone era, surrounded by hundreds of newer but still antique gas and diesel tractors. This event offers a fascinating glimpse into American history. The scene is almost surreal as thousands of people stumble through acres of booths displaying hundreds of small steam and gas-powered contraptions, acres of tractors, acres of flea market, an antique car display area, a field worked by a giant steam tractor, and more. You can take a ride on a bona fide steam train that takes attendees in a short loop around the campground. The train’s smokestack adds to the swirling mist of coal and wood smoke that follows you everywhere on the grounds. You’ll get smoky, dusty, sweaty and thirsty during the day, but you’ll love it! The people watching is excellent. There’s the usual carnival food, plus ice cream made with steam power and water pumped out of the ground by steam power. The entire event is a clattering, pounding, whistling, smoky, searing assault on the senses. We can’t wait to go back! Always the first weekend in August. In Buckley, a small town about 15 miles south of Traverse City. Runs most all day, and the parking lot is always crowded, but you’ll find room. Head south on US 31 from Traverse City toward Buckley, then follow the signs. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
